Foundation ASP for Dreamweaver 8 (Foundation)
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Omar Elbaga,Rob Turnbull
ISBN: 1590595688
Publisher: friends of ED
Year: 2006
Pages: 360

Product Description
Do you want to learn about Microsoft's ASP and use it via Dreamweaver 8 to add the power of a database to your
website? Use dynamic web forms to exchange data between you and your users? Build complete web applications?
This book shows you how to do all that and more. Dreamweaver 8 takes a lot of the hard work out of performing
tasks such as integrating a database into your website, but it can't do everything. That's why this book
not only shows you how to use all of Dreamweaver's functions, but also shows you how the underlying code
functions, so you can then work around Dreamweaver's shortcomings. There's no attempt to turn you into
a code guru, but you'll come away with sufficient knowledge of basic ASP to have the confidence to dive
into the Dreamweaver code and tweak it to your own requirements. The emphasis is exclusively on ASP, so
you don't waste any time on information that's not relevant to what you want to do. Omar and Rob first take
you through the latest version of Dreamweaver, and how ASP fits into it, then look in-depth at setting
up your work environment -- installing ASP, Access (and SQL Server), and the IIS web server, making sure
they are all working together, and setting up a new web site via Dreamweaver. They then get to work, using
several tutorials and real world examples, covering topics such as ASP Essentials (knowing what ASP
code looks like,) working with forms, designing and implementing effective databases using Access
and SQL Server, debugging and troubleshooting, and creating dynamic navigation, login, and search
functionality. In this book, you'll learn: How to install and configure a testing environment using
ASP, IIS, Dreamweaver 8, and SQL Server or Access The fundamentals of the ASP language and good database
design How to use all the Dreamweaver 8 ASP server behaviors The ins and outs of exchanging data
between your users and your database using dynamic web forms How to build complete ASP web applications,
including a photo gallery and a blog Summary of Contents: Chapter 1: Dreamweaver and Dynamic Sites
Chapter 2: The Dreamweaver Environment Chapter 3: A First Taste of ASP Chapter 4: Databases
Chapter 5: Working with Forms Chapter 6: Building a Random Quote Generator Chapter 7: Completing
the Quotes Administration System Chapter 8: Restricting Access Chapter 9: Creating a Blog

Operating Systems Design and Implementation (3rd Edition) (Prentice Hall Software Series)
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Andrew S Tanenbaum,Albert S Woodhull
ISBN: 0131429388
Publisher: Prentice Hall
Year: 2006
Pages: 1080

Product Description
Most books on operating systems deal with theory while ignoring practice. While the usual principles
are covered in detail, the book describes a small, but real UNIX-like operating system: MINIX. The book
demonstrates how it works while illustrating the principles behind it. Operating Systems: Design
and Implementation Second Edition
provides the MINIX source code. The relevant selections of the
MINIX code are described in detail. When it first came out, MINIX caused something of a revolution. Within
weeks, it had its own newsgroup on USENET, with 40,000 people. Most wanted to make MINIX bigger and fancier.
Instead, Linux was created. That has become quite popular, very large, and complicated. MINIX, on the
other hand, has remained small and suitable for instruction and example. The book has been revised to
include updates in MINIX, which started out as a v 7 unix clone for a floppy-disk only 8088. It is now aimed
at 386, 486, and pentium machines and is based on the international posix standard instead of on v7. There
are now also versions of MINIX for the Macintosh and SPARC available. Professional programmers will
find this book to be a valuable resource and reference book.

Author(s): Christian Nagel,Bill Evjen,Jay Glynn,Morgan Skinner,Karli Watson,Allen Jones
ISBN: 0764575341
Publisher: Wrox
Year: 2005
Pages: 1416

Product Description
Professional C# 2005 prepares you to program in C#, and it provides the necessary background information
on how the .NET architecture works. It provides examples of applications that use a variety of related
technologies, including database access, dynamic web pages, advanced graphics, and directory access.
The only requirement is that you are familiar with at least one other high-level language used on Windows
– either C++, VB, or J++. It starts with a tutorial on C# and the .NET framework. This introduction
assumes no prior knowledge of .NET, but it does move rapidly, on the assumption that the reader is an experienced
programmer. Once this background knowledge is established, the book starts to sweep through the vast
.NET class library, showing how you can use C# to solve various tasks. This comprehensive coverage is
one of the key selling points of previous versions of the book, and is maintained and enhanced with this
new edition by adding new chapters on Generics, ObjectSpaces, Yukon, and Indigo. Some reference material
is included either as appendices or is available to download from the Wrox website. After the introduction
and initial chapter, the book is divided into a number of sections that cover both the C# language and its
application in a variety of areas. Coverage includes: • Writing Windows applications
and Windows services • Writing web pages and web services with ASP.NET • Manipulating
XML using C# 2005 • Understanding .NET Assemblies • Using ADO.NET to access
databases • Integration with COM, COM+, and Active Directory • Distributed
applications with .NET Remoting • Generating graphics using C# 2005 • Accessing

Software Engineering for Internet Applications
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Eve Andersson,Philip Greenspun,Andrew Grumet
ISBN: 0262511916
Publisher: The MIT Press
Year: 2006
Pages: 376

Product Description
After completing this self-contained course on server-based Internet applications software, students
who start with only the knowledge of how to write and debug a computer program will have learned how to build
web-based applications on the scale of Amazon.com. Unlike the desktop applications that most students
have already learned to build, server-based applications have multiple simultaneous users. This fact,
coupled with the unreliability of networks, gives rise to the problems of concurrency and transactions,
which students learn to manage by using the relational database system. After working their way to the
end of the book, students will have the skills to take vague and ambitious specifications and turn them
into a system design that can be built and launched in a few months. They will be able to test prototypes
with end-users and refine the application design. They will understand how to meet the challenge of extreme
business requirements with automatic code generation and the use of open-source toolkits where appropriate.
Students will understand HTTP, HTML, SQL, mobile browsers, VoiceXML, data modeling, page flow and interaction
design, server-side scripting, and usability analysis. The book, which originated as the text for an
MIT course, is suitable for classroom use and will be a useful reference for software professionals developing
multi-user Internet applications. It will also help managers evaluate such commercial software as
Microsoft Sharepoint of Microsoft Content Management Server.

Software Abstractions : Logic, Language, and Analysis
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Daniel Jackson
ISBN: 0262101149
Publisher: The MIT Press
Year: 2006
Pages: 504

Product Description
In Software Abstractions Daniel Jackson introduces a new approach to software design that draws on traditional
formal methods but exploits automated tools to find flaws as early as possible. This approach--which
Jackson calls "lightweight formal methods" or "agile modeling"--takes from formal specification
the idea of a precise and expressive notation based on a tiny core of simple and robust concepts but replaces
conventional analysis based on theorem proving with a fully automated analysis that gives designers
immediate feedback. Jackson has developed Alloy, a language that captures the essence of software abstractions
simply and succinctly, using a minimal toolkit of mathematical notions. The designer can use automated
analysis not only to correct errors but also to make models that are more precise and elegant. This approach,
Jackson says, can rescue designers from "the tarpit of implementation technologies" and return them
to thinking deeply about underlying concepts. Software Abstractions introduces the key elements
of the approach: a logic, which provides the building blocks of the language; a language, which adds a
small amount of syntax to the logic for structuring descriptions; and an analysis, a form of constraint
solving that offers both simulation (generating sample states and executions) and checking (finding
counterexamples to claimed properties). The book uses Alloy as a vehicle because of its simplicity and
tool support, but the book's lessons are mostly language-independent, and could also be applied in the
context of other modeling languages.

Perl Hacks : Tips & Tools for Programming, Debugging, and Surviving (Hacks)
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): chromatic,Damian Conway,Curtis "Ovid" Poe
ISBN: 0596526741
Publisher: O'Reilly Media, Inc.
Year: 2006
Pages: 296

Product Description
With more than a million dedicated programmers, Perl has proven to be the best computing language for
the latest trends in computing and business. While other languages have stagnated, Perl remains fresh
thanks to its community-based development model, which encourages the sharing of information among
users. This tradition of knowledge-sharing allows developers to find answers to almost any Perl question
they can dream up.
And you can find many of those answers right here in Perl Hacks. Like all books in O'Reilly's
"Hacks" series, Perl Hacks appeals to a variety of programmers, whether you're a experienced developer
or a dabbler who simply enjoys exploring technology. Each hack is a short lesson - some are practical exercises
that teach you essential skills, while others merely illustrate some of the fun things that Perl can do.
Most hacks have two parts: a direct answer to the immediate problem you need to solve right now and a deeper,
subtler technique that you can adapt to other situations. Learn how to add CPAN shortcuts to the Firefox
web browser, read files backwards, write graphical games in Perl, and much more.
For your convenience,
Perl Hacks is divided by topic - not according to any sense of relative difficulty - so you can skip around
and stop at any hack you like. Chapters include:

Productivity Hacks
User Interaction
Data Munging

Working with Modules
Object Hacks
Debugging
Whether you're a newcomer or an expert, you'll find
great value in Perl Hacks, the only Perl guide that offers something useful and fun for everyone.

Agent-based Supply Network Event Management (Whitestein Series in Software Agent Technologies)
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Roland Zimmermann
ISBN: 3764374861
Publisher: Birkhauser
Year: 2006
Pages: 329

Product Description
"Supply Chain Event Management (SCEM)" is one of the major topics in application-oriented Supply Chain
Management. However, many solutions lack conceptual precision and currently available client-server
SCEM-systems are ill-suited for complex supply networks in today's business environment. Agent-based
proactive information logistics promises to overcome existing deficits by providing event-related
information to all participants in the distributed environment. Hence, follow-up costs of disruptive
events are significantly reduced for all network participants and performance of a supply network is
increased. In this book a thorough analysis of the event management problem domain is the starting point
to develop a generic agent-based approach to Supply Network Event Management. The main focus lies on
practical issues of event management (e.g. semantic interoperability) and economic benefits to be
achieved with agent technology in this state-of-the-art problem domain.

Analog VLSI Circuits for the Perception of Visual Motion
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Alan A. Stocker
ISBN: 047085491X
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
Year: 2006
Pages: 242

Product Description
Although it is now possible to integrate many millions of transistors on a single chip, traditional digital
circuit technology is now reaching its limits, facing problems of cost and technical efficiency when
scaled down to ever-smaller feature sizes. The analysis of biological neural systems, especially for
visual processing, has allowed engineers to better understand how complex networks can effectively
process large amounts of information, whilst dealing with difficult computational challenges. Analog
and parallel processing are key characteristics of biological neural networks. Analog VLSI circuits
using the same features can therefore be developed to emulate brain-style processing. Using standard
CMOS technology, they can be cheaply manufactured, permitting efficient industrial and consumer applications
in robotics and mobile electronics. This book explores the theory, design and implementation of analog
VLSI circuits, inspired by visual motion processing in biological neural networks. Using a novel approach
pioneered by the author himself, Stocker explains in detail the construction of a series of electronic
chips, providing the reader with a valuable practical insight into the technology. Analog VLSI Circuits
for the Perception of Visual Motion:
analyses the computational problems in visual motion perception;

examines the issue of optimization in analog networks through high level processes such as motion segmentation
and selective attention;
demonstrates network implementation in analog VLSI CMOS technology to provide
computationally efficient devices;
sets out measurements of final hardware implementation;
illustrates
the similarities of the presented circuits with the human visual motion perception system;
includes
an accompanying website with video clips of circuits under real-time visual conditions and additional
supplementary material. With a complete review of all existing neuromorphic analog VLSI systems for
visual motion sensing, Analog VLSI Circuits for the Perception of Visual Motion is a unique reference
for advanced students in electrical engineering, artificial intelligence, robotics and computational
neuroscience. It will also be useful for researchers, professionals, and electronics engineers working
in the field.

Interorganisational Standards : Managing Web Services Specifications for Flexible Supply Chains (Contributions to Management Science)
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Ulrich M. Löwer
ISBN: 3790816531
Publisher: Physica-Verlag Heidelberg
Year: 2005
Pages: 294

Product Description
Standards play crucial roles in many different aspects of today’s economy. They can define meanings
of semantics, product interfaces, process steps, or performance levels. Interorganisational standards
are specifications that define business-related semantics and processes, which are made accessible
to other organisations’ information systems. While modular organisation forms such as supply
chain networks demand such standards for higher flexibility, XML-based Web Services offer a relatively
new technological platform to develop such standards. The development of comprehensive interorganisational
standards, however, is far from being completed. This book thus answers the questions, how interorganisational
standards are developed and how different actors should get involved in it. The author uses actor-network
theory to conduct two in-depth case studies on ebXML and RosettaNet. While researchers will find new
explanations for the development of interorganisational standards, managers and executives will
benefit from the strategic implications this book discusses.

Concurrency Theory : Calculi an Automata for Modelling Untimed and Timed Concurrent Systems
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Howard Bowman,Rodolfo Gomez
ISBN: 1852338954
Publisher: Springer
Year: 2005
Pages: 422

Product Description
The book presents an extensive introduction to LOTOS highlighting how the approach differs from competitor
techniques such as CCS and CSP. The notation is illustrated by a number of running examples and by using
the LOTOS process calculus a spectrum of semantic models for concurrent systems are reviewed. Specifically,
linear-time semantics; based on traces; branching-time semantics; using both labelled transition
systems and refusals, are used to highlight true concurrency semantics using event structures. In addition
to this a simple timed extension to LOTOS is introduced using running examples, allowing consideration
of how the untimed semantic models – traces, labelled transition systems, refusals and event
structures – can be generalised to the timed setting. The authors also generalise the simple communicating
automata notation to yield timed automata with multi-way synchronisation using model-checking verification
methods and new techniques to prevent time-locks from arising.

Field-Based Coordination for Pervasive Multiagent Systems (Springer Series on Agent Technology)
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Marco Mamei,Franco Zambonelli
ISBN: 3540279687
Publisher: Springer
Year: 2005
Pages: 242

Product Description
More and more, software systems involve autonomous and distributed software components that have to
execute and interact in open and dynamic environments, such as in pervasive, autonomous, and mobile
applications. The requirements with respect to dynamics, openness, scalability, and decentralization
call for new approaches to software design and development, capable of supporting spontaneous configuration,
tolerating partial failures, or arranging adaptive reorganization of the whole system. Inspired by
the behaviour of complex natural systems, scientists and engineers have started to adjust their mechanisms
and techniques for self-organization and adaption to changing environments. In line with these considerations,
Mamei and Zambonelli propose an interaction model inspired by the way masses and particles in our universe
move and self-organize according to contextual information represented by gravitational and electromagnetic
fields. The key idea is to have the components’ actions driven by computational force fields,
generated by the components themselves or by some infrastructures, and propagated across the environment.
Together with its supporting middleware infrastructure – available with additional information
under http://www.agentgroup.unimore.it – this model can serve as the basis for a general purpose
and widely applicable approach for the design and development of adaptive distributed applications.

Product Details
Author(s): Václav Smídl,Anthony Quinn
ISBN: 3540288198
Publisher: Springer
Year: 2005
Pages: 227

Product Description
This is the first book-length treatment of the Variational Bayes (VB) approximation in signal processing.
It has been written as a self-contained, self-learning guide for academic and industrial research groups
in signal processing, data analysis, machine learning, identification and control. It reviews the
VB distributional approximation, showing that tractable algorithms for parametric model identification
can be generated in off-line and on-line contexts. Many of the principles are first illustrated via easy-to-follow
scalar decomposition problems. In later chapters, successful applications are found in factor analysis
for medical image sequences, mixture model identification and speech reconstruction. Results with
simulated and real data are presented in detail. The unique development of an eight-step "VB method",
which can be followed in all cases, enables the reader to develop a VB inference algorithm from the ground
up, for their own particular signal or image model.

Product Description
Due to the lack of a uniform schema for Web documents and the sheer amount and dynamics of Web data, both
the effectiveness and the efficiency of information management and retrieval of Web data is often unsatisfactory
when using conventional data management techniques. Web community, defined as a set of Web-based documents
with its own logical structure, is a flexible and efficient approach to support information retrieval
and to implement various applications. Zhang and his co-authors explain how to construct and analyse
Web communities based on information like Web document contents, hyperlinks, or user access logs. Their
approaches combine results from Web search algorithms, Web clustering methods, and Web usage mining.
They also detail the necessary preliminaries needed to understand the algorithms presented, and they
discuss several successful existing applications. Researchers and students in information retrieval
and Web search find in this all the necessary basics and methods to create and understand Web communities.
Professionals developing Web applications will additionally benefit from the samples presented for
their own designs and implementations.

Author(s): Russ Miles,Kim Hamilton
ISBN: 0596009828
Publisher: O'Reilly Media, Inc.
Year: 2006
Pages: 286

Product Description
"Since its original introduction in 1997, the Unified Modeling Language has revolutionized software
development. Every integrated software development environment in the world--open-source, standards-based,
and proprietary--now supports UML and, more importantly, the model-driven approach to software development.
This makes learning the newest UML standard, UML 2.0, critical for all software developers--and there
isn't a better choice than this clear, step-by-step guide to learning the language." --Richard Mark
Soley, Chairman and CEO, OMG If you're like most software developers, you're building systems that are
increasingly complex. Whether you're creating a desktop application or an enterprise system, complexity
is the big hairy monster you must manage.
The Unified Modeling Language (UML) helps you manage this complexity.
Whether you're looking to use UML as a blueprint language, a sketch tool, or as a programming language,
this book will give you the need-to-know information on how to apply UML to your project. While there are
plenty of books available that describe UML, Learning UML 2.0 will show you how to use it. Topics covered
include:

Capturing your system's requirements in your model to help you ensure that your designs meet
your users' needs
Modeling the parts of your system and their relationships
Modeling how the parts
of your system work together to meet your system's requirements
Modeling how your system moves into
the real world, capturing how your system will be deployed Engaging and accessible, this book shows you
how to use UML to craft and communicate your project's design. Russ Miles and Kim Hamilton have written
a pragmatic introduction to UML based on hard-earned practice, not theory. Regardless of the software
process or methodology you use, this book is the one source you need to get up and running with UML 2.0. Additional
information including exercises can be found at www.learninguml2.com.
Russ Miles is a software engineer
for General Dynamics UK, where he works with Java and Distributed Systems, although his passion at the
moment is Aspect Orientation and, in particular, AspectJ. Kim Hamilton is a senior software engineer
at Northrop Grumman, where she's designed and implemented a variety of systems including web applications
and distributed systems, with frequent detours into algorithms development.

Linux Annoyances for Geeks : Getting the Most Flexible System in the World Just the Way You Want It
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Michael Jang
ISBN: 0596008015
Publisher: O'Reilly Media, Inc.
Year: 2006
Pages: 502

Product Description
GNU/Linux is an immensely popular operating system that is both extremely stable and reliable. But it
can also induce minor headaches at the most inopportune times, if you're not fully up to speed with its
capabilities.
A unique approach to running and administering Linux systems, Linux Annoyances for
Geeks addresses the many poorly documented and under-appreciated topics that make the difference between
a system you struggle with and a system you really enjoy. This book is for power users and system administrators
who want to clear away barriers to using Linux for themselves and for less-trained users in their organizations.

This book meticulously tells you how to get a stubborn wireless card to work under Linux, and reveals little-known
sources for wireless driversand information. It tells you how to add extra security to your systems,
such as boot passwords, and how to use tools such as rescue disks to overcome overly zealous security measures
in a pinch. In every area of desktop and server use, the book is chock full of advice based on hard-earned
experience.
Author Michael Jang has spent many hours trying out software in a wide range of environments
and carefully documenting solutions for the most popular Linux distributions. (The book focuses on
Red Hat/Fedora, SUSE, and Debian.) Many of the topics presented here are previously undocumented or
are discussed only in obscure email archives.
One of the valuable features of this book for system administrators
and Linux proponents in general is the organization of step-by-step procedures that they can customize
for naive end-users at their sites. Jang has taken into account not only the needs of a sophisticated readership,
but the needs of other people those readers may serve.
Sometimes, a small thing for a user (such as being
able to play a CD) or for an administrator (such as updating an organizations' systems from a central server)
can make or break the adoption of Linux. This book helps you overcome the most common annoyances in deploying
Linux, and trains you in the techniques that will help you overcome other problems you find along the way.

In keeping with the spirit of the Annoyances series, the book adopts a sympathetic tone that will quickly
win you over. Rather than blaming you for possessing limited Linux savvy, Linux Annoyances for Geeks
takes you along for a fun-filled ride as you master the system together.

Exploratory Analysis of Spatial and Temporal Data: A Systematic Approach
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Natalia Andrienko,Gennady Andrienko
ISBN: 3540259945
Publisher: Springer
Year: 2005
Pages: 703

Product Description
Exploratory data analysis (EDA) is about detecting and describing patterns, trends, and relations
in data, motivated by certain purposes of investigation. As something relevant is detected in data,
new questions arise, causing specific parts to be viewed in more detail. So EDA has a significant appeal:
it involves hypothesis generation rather than mere hypothesis testing. The authors describe in detail
and systemize approaches, techniques, and methods for exploring spatial and temporal data in particular.
They start by developing a general view of data structures and characteristics and then build on top of
this a general task typology, distinguishing between elementary and synoptic tasks. This typology
is then applied to the description of existing approaches and technologies, resulting not just in recommendations
for choosing methods but in a set of generic procedures for data exploration. Professionals practicing
analysis will profit from tested solutions – illustrated in many examples – for reuse in
the catalogue of techniques presented. Students and researchers will appreciate the detailed description
and classification of exploration techniques, which are not limited to spatial data only. In addition,
the general principles and approaches described will be useful for designers of new methods for EDA.

Critical Infrastructure Protection in Homeland Security : Defending a Networked Nation
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Ted G. Lewis
ISBN: 0471786284
Publisher: Wiley-Interscience
Year: 2006
Pages: 474

Product Description
A scientific approach to the new field of critical infrastructure protection This book offers a unique
scientific approach to the new field of critical infrastructure protection: it uses network theory,
optimization theory, and simulation software to analyze and understand how infrastructure sectors
evolve, where they are vulnerable, and how they can best be protected. The author demonstrates that infrastructure
sectors as diverse as water, power, energy, telecommunications, and the Internet have remarkably similar
structures. This observation leads to a rigorous approach to vulnerability analysis in all of these
sectors. The analyst can then decide the best way to allocate limited funds to minimize risk, regardless
of industry sector. The key question addressed in this timely book is: What should be protected and how?
The author proposes that the answer lies in allocating a nation's scarce resources to the most critical
components of each infra-structure-the so-called critical nodes. Using network theory as a foundation,
readers learn how to identifya small handful of critical nodes and then allocate resources to reduce
or eliminate risk across the entire sector. This book is essential for all corporate, government agency,
and military professionals tasked with assessingvulnerability and developing and implementing protection
systems. In addition, the book is recommended for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students
studying national security, computing, and other disciplines where infrastructure security is an
issue.

Representations for Genetic and Evolutionary Algorithms
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Franz Rothlauf
ISBN: 354025059X
Publisher: Springer
Year: 2006
Pages: 325

Product Description
In the field of genetic and evolutionary algorithms (GEAs), a large amount of theory and empirical study
has been focused on operators and test problems, while problem representation has often been taken as
given. This book breaks with this tradition and provides a comprehensive overview on the influence of
problem representations on GEA performance. The book summarizes existing knowledge regarding problem
representations and describes how basic properties of representations, such as redundancy, scaling,
or locality, influence the performance of GEAs and other heuristic optimization methods. Using the
developed theory, representations can be analyzed and designed in a theory-guided matter. The theoretical
concepts are used for solving integer optimization problems and network design problems more efficiently.
The book is written in an easy-readable style and is intended for researchers, practitioners, and students
who want to learn about representations. This second edition extends the analysis of the basic properties
of representations and introduces a new chapter on the analysis of direct representations.

ISBN: 0471798320
Publisher: For Dummies

Pages: 356

Product Description
More and more schools, colleges, universities and business organizations and even government training
agencies are taking their classes online. Blackboard is the leading platform for managing online classes,
but surprisingly, there are no books telling instructors how to use it. Most places have a general hands-on
introductory online course for new faculty that says, here is Blackboard, here is our course template,
here are best practices in teaching online, here is what we expect from you, here are our policies and procedures,
here's the link to library services, now go get a ready to start. And it usually takes place over 5-6 weeks,
leaving faculty somewhat bewildered and overloaded with information. Blackboard provides an online
manual with each classroom, and instructors have access to it, but it's not especially teacher-friendly.
This book is intended to tell potential and current instructors,OK, you've been told to take your class
online with Blackboard, now what? Here's what you need to know to get it online successfully. The book
is organized to follow the order of concerns that an instructor would be likely to have, and then in the
order in which the instructor would begin using the features. It is specific, detailed, with step-by-step
examples to the common issues facing all teachers using Blackboard to set up a classroom. The book also
discusses using Blackboard as an adjunct to a face-to-face classes. When learning theory or instructional
design theory is presented, it is in the context of best practices with applications, rather than as theoretical
discussion. Readers will be able to go from class notes to developing a ready-to-go online class, and
then on to actually running the class successfully.

Product Description
Evolutionary Computation for Optimization and Modeling is an introduction to evolutionary computation,
a field which includes genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming, evolution strategies, and genetic
programming. The text is a survey of some application of evolutionary algorithms. It introduces
mutation, crossover, design issues of selection and replacement methods, the issue of populations
size, and the question of design of the fitness function. It also includes a methodological material
on efficient implementation. Some of the other topics in this book include the design of simple evolutionary
algorithms, applications to several types of optimization, evolutionary robotics, simple evolutionary
neural computation, and several types of automatic programming including genetic programming. The
book gives applications to biology and bioinformatics and introduces a number of tools that can be used
in biological modeling, including evolutionary game theory. Advanced techniques such as cellular
encoding, grammar based encoding, and graph based evolutionary algorithms are also covered. This book presents
a large number of homework problems, projects, and experiments, with a goal of illustrating single aspects
of evolutionary computation and comparing different methods. Its readership is intended for an undergraduate
or first-year graduate course in evolutionary computation for computer science, engineering, or other
computational science students. Engineering, computer science, and applied math students will find
this book a useful guide to using evolutionary algorithms as a problem solving tool.
